25th Annual Gimse Photo Contest — 2008

This photo contest showcases the photos of students who have studied abroad. The photos are judged by students, faculty and staff on cross-cultural content. This year, there were 618 submissions, five of which were mine. Of these submissions, only 30 made it into the show and there were three Best of Show and four Honorable Mentions. Results:

“Music and Dance at Pótkulcs” — Budapest, Hungary (Best of Show) “Protest near Taksim” — Istanbul, Turkey (in show)

Left: “Music and Dance at Pótkulcs” — Budapest, Hungary (won Best of Show).
This is a photo of my favorite bar in Budapest. Every Tuesday night they had traditional Hungarian folk music, so many of us on the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program would go to this bar to hang out and listen to music. Many times Hungarians would get up and start dancing. This photo captures the movement of the music and dance that happened frequently at Pótkulcs.

Right: “Protest near Taksim” — Istanbul, Turkey (in show)
While a friend of mine and I were in Istanbul, there was a large protest of over 100,000 people. This was a smaller group, but still, it was difficult to walk down the street with so many protesters, so we stopped on a side street and snapped a few pictures, including this one.

Photos from Abroad

Budapest / Hungary / Prague / Bratislava / Greece / Istanbul / Copenhagen

Ráday utca — a view from outside my apartmentThese are photos from my adventures abroad in Spring Semester 2007. I was studying Mathematics on the Budapest Semesters in Math program.

Before going abroad, I purchased a Canon Rebel XT, so being abroad was a great way to learn about photography and composition. For the most part, I did not take overly artsy shots; rather, I tried to accurately capture the culture while creating a good composition.

Eventually I will write a script so that my photos will automatically appear from Flickr on this website, but this is what you are stuck with for now!

Algorithm Art

I created a program that randomly plots red points on the screen (or through mouse clicks). Then it will randomly make connections (red lines) between these points. Blue shapes surround every point and you can control how many sides the shape has and the diameter. So with this randomization and controlling the shapes, cool artwork is created.

I made this to make a C++ geometry primitives library, but I ended up liking the output so much that it became the ultimate procrastination tool. I hope to apply this to data visualization and turn this into a 3D program.
